After beating San Diego on Wednesday (67-49), the Aztecs came back on Friday night and defeated the LIU Sharks 81-64, though not in the prettiest way.
Double Digit Scorers
The Aztecs had four players who scored in double figures. San Diego State was led by forward Matt Mitchell and guard Malachi Flynn. Mitchell had 18, which most of them came from the mid-range area. Flynn had 13 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. In addition, Flynn dished out 10 assists and had zero turnovers. Also, Yanni Wetzell scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jordan Schakel had 15 points and 12 of them came from beyond the arc.
The Aztecs did a tremendous job sharing the basketball. With 28 shots made, 20 of those baskets were assisted on. As mentioned earlier Flynn led the way with 10 assists with no turnovers. Also, junior guard Trey Pulliam dished out seven assists and Mitchell had three.
In this game the struggled guarding in the paint. It felt like the Sharks got to the paint with ease. They got a lot of open/easy looks near the basket. This also allowed LIU to draw a ton of fouls from the Aztecs. Forward Trey Flowers lead the Sharks with 15 points. Next game, the Aztecs have to really improve stopping their opposition from driving to the hoop.
In the Aztecs first four games they did a great job of rebounding the basketball. However, this game they really seemed to struggle. LIU outrebounded the Aztecs by 35-31. This is the first time all season that the Aztecs had not outrebounded their opponent. If the Aztecs want to really improve that is an area they really need to.
