Following the SDSU Coaches Recruiting Trail

Last week there was not much news from the coaching staff on the road as it was likely that they were back at San Diego State hosting Chase Jeter, all the while fans were clamoring to know where the staff was during the first April Evaluation Period. The Evaluation Period is important time to see players play against top-level competition and often leads to new offers. It is also a time for coaches to check-in with recruits that they have already offered, letting them know they are still a priority.

This week we followed Twitter to find out which events the coaching staff was at. We have attached a list of tweets, as links, updating where the coaches were and which players were at the event. I do not know if the coaches were actually watching these players, these are just guesses. As a disclaimer, just because an AAU team says that the coaching staff is watching their team that does not necessarily mean they are there to watch them or a player on their team.

FRIDAY

A member of the coaching staff was at the Nike EYBL in Indianapolis, Indiana. We know that someone was there watching the Las Vegas Prospects vs. Wisconsin Playground Elite. I’m not exactly sure whom they were watching, however there are many players with a San Diego State offer at the NikeEYBL. Players with an Aztec offer include: Nathan Mensah (California Supreme), Taeshon Cherry (Oakland Soldiers), Tevian Jones (California Supreme), and Joel Mensah (New York Lightning).

SATURDAY

On Saturday morning a coach was in Atlanta, Georgia for the Adidas Gauntlet. They were spotted at the Cali Boost vs. Arkansas Hawks game. Again, I am not entirely sure whom they were watching, however they do have 2020 Mater Dei Catholic (Chula Vista, CA) point guard Beon Riley. The recruits with Aztec offers in Atlanta includes Warren Washington (Gamepoint Pump N Run), Jules Bernard (Compton Magic), and Timmy Allen (Compton Magic).

In the afternoon in Atlanta a coach was checking out Team Lillard vs. Florida Sons. The buzz around Twitter and AztecMesa is that the coaching staff was looking at 7-0 big man Tolu Jacobs (Team Lillard), but that is unconfirmed.

The coach in Atlanta was also on hand to watch Gamepoint Pump N Run’s 16U team, which is led by local shooting guard Ryan Langborg. As one of the premier AAU teams in San Diego it is important to keep an eye on the young local guys and check in on their development.

In Indianapolis a coach was checking out Oakland Soldiers versus California Supreme. This would be a logical game to watch since there are a number of prospects from California on both teams.

SUNDAY

On Sunday a member of the Aztecs coaching staff was at the Terrific 24, which is in Indianapolis. They were there for a couple of games, including Vegas Elite vs BTI Select 2018 and for Belmont Shore vs. A2P. Players that would likely be getting a look are Aztec recruit Jamal Bey (Vegas Elite) and four-star prospect Bryce Hamilton (Belmont Shore).

Beside the reported instances I am led to believe that at least one coach stopped by the Under Armour event that was also in Indianapolis. It still has not been confirmed to me who they were there to see, however it would not surprise me to hear new names coming from that event. Miles Norris (Earl Watson Elite) was at Under Armour, however the Aztecs are not in his top two.

Also even though it was not reported that the staff was at a game, I am assuming that they watched San Diego All-Stars 16U team this weekend before offering Rajean “Boogie” Ellis.

This weekend ends the evaluation period and starts a quiet period where players can come take unofficial visits on campus. The next evaluation period starts in July, however in the mean time keep an eye out for visits, offers, and hopefully commitments.
