The first offer of the Brian Dutcher-era went out today in the form of 6-2 Adelanto High School point guard Jordan Campbell. Campbell is a 2018 prospect who is running with the California Stars during this spring and summer AAU season.
After hearing of the offer we reached out to Campbell’s AAU coach Julius Von Hanzlik to get a sense of the three-star guard’s game and recruitment.
When you watch film of Campbell the first thing that stands out is his athleticism. Watching him on offense you notice that he is fast, strong, and explosive. Campbell is the new type of guard, the type the Aztecs have never really had, a scorer and facilitator that can run the offense for himself or his teammates. San Diego State has been a haven for athletic players, however I cannot recall them going after a player with the same type of athleticism as Campbell. Von Hanzlik goes in-depth in explaining Campbell’s game:
“Jordan is a big time athlete! He is very explosive. He has a Russell Westbrook mentality and athleticism. Jordan also is a strong finisher in the paint. Defensively he is a really good on the ball defender.”
It is incredible that both Rivals and Scout only rate Campbell a three-star prospect. Coming from Victorville and playing at Adelanto has not given him the opportunity to get a lot of exposure, but now that he will be playing under Von Hanzlik and California Stars expect to see his recruitment pick up. Currently Campbell has offers from Nevada and San Diego State, however he is receiving interest from Missouri, San Jose State, Southern California, and Texas A&M.
As mentioned earlier, Campbell’s athleticism seems to fit directly into the type of player that the Aztecs recruit. In 2018 San Diego State will be in need of a point guard as Devin Watson will be a senior. Campbell could be the heir apparent if he were to pick San Diego State, but would he be a good fit? Von Hanzlik says yes!
“Jordan would fit in perfectly!! He would bring high energy and athleticism on both ends of the court. Also Jordan would bring toughness!”
This AAU season will be an opportunity for Campbell to show his skills in front of college coaches. With teams expected to come after him, the San Diego State coaching staff will need to show up to his games and recruit this young man hard.
As he continues to improve Campbell will be one of the top prospects and should shoot up the rankings of coaches, scouts, and fans alike.
