With basketball events closed, San Diego State's coaching staff has been working hard during this pandemic, contacting transfers and offering recruits from future class. While they have been looking at players for 2020, they have been looking ahead to the future and extending offers from 2021 and beyond. Over the last 10 days the Aztecs offered three guards, 2021s KJ Simpson and Glenn Taylor, and 2022 Ramel Lloyd. This past week the Aztecs dove back into 2022 recruiting and offered four-star center Dereck Lively.
Lively is a 7-0 center from Westtown High School in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. He is ranked #30 overall by 247Sports and is the #4 center in the 2022 class. When AAU starts back up you will be able to find Lively playing for Team Final of the Nike EYBL.
Lively is a back to the basket traditional big who is a force on both ends of the court. On the offensive side of the ball he is active around the basket and uses his athleticism and touch to score around the basket. He runs the floor well in transition and is a great rebounder on both sides of the floor. Defensively he is a strong shot blocker who uses his length to disrupt shots without fouling.
Going into his junior year, Lively will need to get stronger to battle with the big men in college. He has a thin body, but with some time in the weight room he could easily add some muscle to his frame. As mentioned earlier, he plays a lot around the basket and because of that we did not see how his shot looks. In a recent interview Lively mentioned that he was going to be working on his shot, which was something we did not see in his film as it was mostly dunks and defense.
The San Diego State offer is Lively's 10th offer. Big time programs such as Ohio State and UCLA have already offered the rising junior and one can expect the list of suitors to continue growing. With the difficulty in finding bigs that fit in the San Diego State system, getting in on Lively is a good move by Coach Brian Dutcher and staff.
