Today we begin our player previews as we approach the season opener on October 30th. This season we are going to begin our player previews by starting with the freshman class and then work our way to the seniors.
San Diego State brought in a one-man freshman class as they got a commitment from San Leandro High School forward Keshad Johnson. Johnson is a three-star recruit from Oakland, California who chose the Aztecs over twelve other offers, including Fresno State, which was his other finalist.
We were able to catch Johnson over at the Swish League this summer and it allowed us to compare his game to the film that we had seen. Everyone knows about his high level athleticism; however what I failed to realize is how that athleticism translates to the court. At Swish he used his athleticism to get to the basket for easy scores on the offensive end. Defensively his great athleticism allowed him to catch up to his opponent to impede them from getting to the basket or for a chase down block.
The key to seeing the floor this year for Johnson will be his rebounding. Known as a good rebounder in high school, Johnson will need to bring that same prowess to the college level. His scoring will not be relied on early, but his defense and rebounding will. Johnson will be an off the bench contributor that will need to build his role in non-conference heading to conference play. Forecast: 8.9 mpg; 2.3 ppg; 3.0 rpg
